Coffee is a global commodity and, therefore, a bridge connecting different worlds. This product was the pretext for establishing narrow commercial networks between Hamburg and Central America since the mid-nineteenth century, through the active role of German immigrants in this region. They founded export companies, acquired coffee plantations and became involved in the transport infrastructure that allowed the circulation of the product. During the twentieth century, commercial networks became fragile due to economic crises and the changes concerning foreign policies. However, despite all the transformations suffered in this time, traces of commercial connections established between German business representatives and Central American coffee can still be found.
The historian Christiane Berth presents the results of an investigation on the subject. Based on various historical documents, it analyses the histories of German migrants in Central America, their experiences in coffee production and the changes in commercial networks around the aromatic grain.

Kaffee-Welten: Handelsnetzwerke und Biografien zwischen Hamburg und Zentralamerika
Kaffee ist eine globale Handelsware, die unterschiedliche Welten vernetzte. Zwischen Hamburg und Zentralamerika entstanden seit dem 19. Jahrhundert enge Handelsverbindungen, wobei deutsche Auswanderer eine zentrale Rolle spielten: Sie gründeten Exportfirmen, erwarben Kaffeeplantagen und investierten in Transportunternehmen. Im 20. Jahrhundert verschlechterten sich die Handelsbeziehungen: Weltwirtschaftskrise und Nationalsozialismus ließen die Verbindungen brüchig werden, bis sie schließlich während des Zweiten Weltkriegs zerbrachen. Trotzdem lassen sich in den zentralamerikanischen Kaffeeanbaugebieten noch heute Spuren der deutschen Präsenz finden, auch weil es in der Nachkriegszeit gelang, einige Netzwerke wieder aufzubauen.
Die Historikerin Christiane Berth präsentiert die Ergebnisse ihrer Forschungen in den Kaffee-Welten Zentralamerikas. Anhand von historischen Dokumenten beleuchtet sie die Geschichten der Auswanderer, ihre Erfahrungen in den Kaffeeanbaugebieten sowie Veränderungen im globalen Kaffeehandel.
