Seminar on the Amazon Rainforest

On December 12th, 2014 in Hamburg two Brazilian indigenous leaders - Benki Piyãko Ashaninka and Puwé Luis Puyanawa – will talk about the struggle of their communities in order to protect the Amazon rainforest and about their work in education for suistainable development. After this there will be a discussion on the topic "Who bears responsibility for the Amazon Rainforest?" Civil society, academia and politics / economy will participate at this discussion.

 

On the same day the UN Climate Change Conference (COP20) will be ending in Lima, Peru. One of the main themes of this Conference is the protection of important carbon sinks such as the Amazon Rainforest.

 

The event is sponsored by the Society for Threatened Peoples, University of Bremen, the Climate Alliance and the German Commission for UNESCO. The speech by the two indigenous leaders will be held in Portuguese, with translation to German.
