Created in 2005, The Scientific Interest Group (GIS) of Maritime History was reorganized in 2015 to open up its work on maritime and coastal environments to interdisciplinary research. The network now brings together 30 French institutions including: 18 universities and 12 public institutions.
The GIS is labeled by the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) since 2010, which provides scientific recognition and financial support. In total, 400 French researchers, including about sixty doctoral students, have joined together to share their expertise in social and environmental sciences of the coast and the sea.
The GIS is open to the international scene, and already has a network of researchers in 34 institutions in Europe (Belgium, Finland, Germany, Greece, Holland, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), America (Argentina, Canada, Chile, United States), North Africa (Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia), the Middle East (Lebanon) and Japan.

La red reúne ahora a 30 instituciones francesas, entre ellas: 18 universidades y 12 instituciones públicas.
El GIS está etiquetado por el Centro Nacional de Investigación Científica (CNRS) desde 2010, que le proporciona reconocimiento científico y apoyo financiero. En total, 400 investigadores franceses, entre ellos unos sesenta estudiantes de doctorado, se han unido para compartir su experiencia en ciencias sociales y medioambientales del litoral y del mar.
El SIG está abierto al panorama internacional y ya cuenta con una red de investigadores en 34 instituciones de Europa (Alemania, Bélgica, España, Finlandia, Grecia, Holanda, Italia, Portugal, Reino Unido y Suecia), América (Argentina, Canadá, Chile, Estados Unidos), Norte de África (Marruecos, Senegal, Túnez), Oriente Medio (Líbano) y Japón.
