*Javier Gómez Prieto is Scientific Officer Smart Specialisation at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission
The initiatives concerning smart specialisation play an important role within the development of concrete niches of innovation in the EU and Latin America and the Caribbean. The Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission developed pilot activities, which motivated Latin American and Caribbean to implement similar processes. The experiences, analysis and proposals deriving from this process were collected in diverse studies, which will allow the adaptation of the smart specialisation concept within other contexts.
