On 18 April 2013, the President of the EU-LAC Foundation, Benita Ferrero-Waldner and the Executive Director, Jorge Valdez, presented the first edition of the EU-LAC Awards. At the ceremony, which took place at the Casa de América in Madrid, the Representatives of the EU-LAC Foundation called for nominations for the awards and presented the composition of the jury.

Among the guests were two members of the jury, José Antonio García Belaunde, former Peruvian Foreign Minister, and Klaus Hänsch, former President of the European Parliament. Julio María Sanguinetti, Ex-President of Uruguay, and Michael Reid, Americas Editor of The Economist, complete the jury. The Awards will be given for the first time at the beginning of 2014. They will be awarded annually to projects carried out in the four categories Journalism, Entrepreneurial Innovation, Public Management and Citicens’ Initiatives.

The EU-LAC Awards contribute to the Foundation’s objective of strengthening debate on common strategies and activities in order to improve the economic and socio-cultural partnership between the countries of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union, as well as its visibility.
