The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all the economic and social sectors of the world. The tourism sector, in particular, has been severely impacted due to its intrinsic dependence on people's mobility, which was significantly limited due to the restrictions and containment measures imposed by governments to control the spread of the virus. This situation affected more seriously the countries, regions and communities that are more dependent on tourism, such as the European Union anthe Latin American and Caribbean Region. In both cases, tourism has an important multiplier effect in various sectors of the economy, due to links with agriculture, food, construction, transportation, creative industries, among others.

This event was the fourth of a cycle of five events on Sustainable Tourism organized by UNDP and the EU-LAC Foundation. The objective of this space was to focus on environmentally sustainable tourism practices and models (circular procurement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resource efficiency; water management, waste management, food, transport, construction, etc.), diversification of tourism supply by reducing seasonality of demand while strengthening local communities and the local cultural sector (cultural, community-based tourism), promotion of intra-national/regional tourismraising awareness and encourage more sustainable tourist behaviouras well as their often-greater difficulties that have affected the environment in which the tourism industry is based upon.
