Mission of the EU-LAC Foundation to Costa Rica

From 7 to 9 March, Senior Programme Manager of the EU-LAC Foundation, Ernesto Jeger, travelled to San José, Costa Rica, to participate in the event “Fifth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2022”.

The Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development is a regional mechanism to follow up and review the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The Forum is state-led and open to the participation of Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as invited observer nations from outside the region. It involves states, the private sector and civil society, as well as subsidiary bodies of ECLAC, development banks, UN agencies, and regional integration blocs.

The Fifth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2022 was inaugurated by Alicia Bárcena, Executive Secretary of ECLAC; Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the UN; and Carlos Alvarado, President of the Republic of Costa Rica. The main issues addressed during the Forum concerned

  • Innovations in International Development Cooperation;
  • The asymmetry of climate change;
  • The conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity;
  • Education and gender equality;
  • And the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals.

The topics covered in the event are of interest and coincide with the work agenda of the EU-LAC Foundation, which emphasises the importance of the Foundation’s participation in this event. The Forum was attended by representatives of all 33 LAC countries, representatives of Germany, Italy, Spain, Norway, France and Sweden, International Organisations, and representatives of civil society.

The presential format of the Fifth Meeting of the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2022, offered the possibility to meet with strategic partners of the Foundation. In this sense, Ernesto Jeger met with representatives of the OECD Development Centre, the Italo-Latin-American International Organisation (IILA), the Delegation of the Republic of Panama, the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (BCIE), and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to discuss the EU-LAC Foundation’s initiatives for 2022, focusing especially on the upcoming EU- Central America Dialogues.
