ECLAC, the EU and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Chile, with the support of the EU-LAC Foundation, co-organized an international seminar in Santiago de Chile on 4 and 5 October 2012, under the title: “Investment for Economic Growth, Social Inclusion, and Environmental Sustainability”.
The seminar is one of the preparatory events to the I EU-CELAC Summit that will take place on January 2013 in Santiago de Chile. Among the participants of the colloquium were national and international officials, entrepreneurs, representatives from civil societies and diplomatic corps of several countries.
From the EU-LAC Foundation, the President Benita Ferrero-Waldner participated in the opening ceremony of the event together with ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, Alicia Bárcena, Sweden’s Minister of Trade, Ewa Björling, and Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfredo Moreno. During her speech, Mrs Ferrero-Waldner stressed that we must take advantage of occasions like the I EU-CELAC Summit or this preparatory event as turning points in order to increase the importance of the strategic partnership between the two regions.
The four panel sessions and the special intervention of the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, analysed the following topics: corporate social responsibility; green economy; energy efficiency and renewable energy as investment opportunities for sustainable growth; local capacity building in terms of innovation; technology transfer and internationalization of small and medium enterprises.
