International Research Center on Slavery and Post-Slavery - CIRESC

The CIRESC was created by the CNRS, in 2005, following the uprisings of young people in the suburbs of France's major metropolises, calling for the denunciation of the consequences of the history of slavery, those of colonization such as discrimination and racism. The International Research Center on Slavery and Post-Slavery is a CNRS Service and Research Unit (USR 2002) since January 1, 2017.

The objective was to structure, enhance and support research on slavery conducted in France but also to open new fields of research from a multi-disciplinary angle. The founding team of CIRESC has endeavored to internationalize its work and to establish collaborative scientific relationships, particularly with Senegal, Brazil, Haiti, Mexico, Canada and the United States.

This research practice has resulted in the use of the term "slavery" in the plural: "slaveries" to mark the difference between past and present slavery systems and to insist on the characteristics of transatlantic and Indian Ocean slavery that have constructed the notion of race.

El CIRESC fue creado por el CNRS en 2005, a raíz de las revueltas de jóvenes en los suburbios de las grandes ciudades francesas, que pedían que se denunciaran las consecuencias de la historia de la esclavitud y la colonización, así como la discriminación y el racismo. El Centro Internacional de Investigación sobre la Esclavitud y la Post-Esclavitud es una Unidad de Servicio e Investigación del CNRS (USR 2002) desde el 1 de enero de 2017.

El objetivo era estructurar, mejorar y apoyar la investigación sobre la esclavitud realizada en Francia, pero también abrir nuevos campos de investigación desde un ángulo multidisciplinar. El equipo fundador del CIRESC se ha esforzado por internacionalizar sus trabajos y establecer colaboraciones científicas, especialmente con Senegal, Brasil, Haití, México, Canadá y Estados Unidos.

Esta práctica de investigación se ha traducido en el uso del término "esclavitud" en plural: "esclavitudes" para marcar la diferencia entre los sistemas de esclavitud del pasado y del presente y para subrayar las características de la esclavitud transatlántica y del Océano Índico que han configurado la noción de raza.
