The International Conference “Port Cities - Doors of Continents Barranquilla and the ports of Northern Europe: past and present” is going to be held in Barranquilla, on the 14th and 15th of March. This conference is organised by the Universidad del Norte, in the framework of the XXI edition of the Europe Chair and counts with the participation and cofinancing of the EU-LAC Foundation which is financed through voluntary contributions of its Member Countries and in particular the European Union and Germany.
The Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation, Paola Amadei will participate as speaker on the Panel “Port cities in the globalisation” in which she will present "The EU-LAC Foundation in Hamburg: a bridge between Europe and Latin America".
Port cities have always been distinguished from other cities because of their quality of connection and exchange between countries and distant continents, explaining their frequent role in the history of humanity. Given their role as entry points for people, cultures and ideas from the most diverse corners of the world, the great ports of the world have at all times been more than mere transit points for the global flow of goods. Based on the experience of Barranquilla as a port city, the conference aims to shed light on crucial aspects in the life of port cities as well as on the links and the exchange that existed between the Colombian Caribbean and the large ports in Northern Europe, such as Rotterdam or Hamburg. Through five thematic sessions it is sought to determine not only the specific place of port cities in the process of globalization, but also to illustrate more concrete aspects, such as the development of ports in the past and the present, the exchange of people and goods between these two regions as well as "means of contact" in the form of commercial and passenger navigation.
A brief satellite event "Port cities in globalisation - Barranquilla and Hamburg" will be held in the city of Bogota (Colombia) on March 13th. The satellite event is organised by the Universidad del Norte, in the framework of the XXI edition of the Europe Chair, in cooperation with the Organization of Ibero-American States (OEI) and counts with the participation and cofinancing of the EU-LAC Foundation.
