Establishing transnational business partnerships between Latin America and Caribbean and the EU through SMEs: Challenges and Opportunities

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) not only form the backbone of the German economy, but also contribute significantly to value creation in many Latin American countries. Therefore, the partnership between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean, established in 1999, has an important role to play in the promotion of international cooperation between small and medium-sized enterprises in both regions of the world.

Based on a study on the internationalisation of 225 SMEs from nine Latin American countries, Prof. Pinot de Villechenon will present the barriers that Latin American SMEs must overcome in order to gain access to international markets and their value chains and the factors that promote bi-regional partnerships.

Paola Amadei, Executive Director of the EU-LAC Foundation, will introduce the conference and briefly present the Foundation, that recently became an international organization, and its mandate.

The speaker, Prof. dr. Florence Pinot de Villechenon teaches and conducts research at the ESCP Europe Business School. She is the director of the Centre d'Études et de Recherche Amérique Latine Europe (CERALE) at the ESCP. She advises the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education. As a member of numerous institutions (eg "Institute of the Americas", "Maison de l'Amerique Latine"), she contributes to the intensification of relations between Latin America and Europe. Her research addresses subjects as diverse as the EU's policy towards Latin America, European direct investment in Latin America or the internationalization of Latin American SMEs.

The conference is in English.
