The event is organised by the University of the West Indies, and its partners, the Institute of Development Studies and the Platform for Disaster Displacement.
The lecture and roundtable seek to improve public awareness and encourage policy dialogue concerning the region’s vulnerability to the adverse effects of climate change and steps to be taken to enhance the region’s preparedness and responsiveness. The events would thus contribute towards Sustainable Development Agenda (SDGs) 1.5 and 13.1-3, in particular SDG 13.3 -improve education, awareness raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning.
The event will take place on 19th September 2019, at the Nigel Harris Council Room, University of the West Indies Regional Head Quarters, and commence at 4:00 pm.
Prof. Walter Kaelin, Envoy of the Chair of the Platform on Disaster Displacement and Professor Emeritus for International and (Swiss) Constitutional Law, will deliver a keynote address, which will be followed by a roundtable discussion, empanelled by key stakeholders working in the areas of climate change, gender and youth development.
The roundtable A Destiny of Geography?: Climate Change preparedness and response in Caribbean SIDS’ is one of the events selected from 103 applications received in the framework of the "Annual Call for Co-financing on issues relevant to the bi-regional partnership between the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean" offered by the EU-LAC Foundation.
