The work on this topic contributes to the implementation of Chapters 3, 5 and 8 of the 2015 EU-CELAC Action Plan and the EU-CELAC Summit Declarations at the bi-regional level, as well as SDGs 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at the global level.
In the declaration of the 2nd EU-CELAC Ministerial Meeting (Brussels, 2018), members recognised the common challenge of improving productivity as an important driver of growth and prosperity, environmental sustainability, sustainable development, and innovation.
Officials from both regions have expressed their determination to intensify joint efforts to overcome the multidimensional challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which risks exacerbating existing structural gaps, inequalities, and social, economic, and financial exclusion. According to recurrent statements by authorities in both regions, there is a need to ensure a strong and sustainable recovery, and to build more innovative, inclusive, and resilient economies and societies, including by making better use of trade and investment opportunities.
Highlighting the potential of a bi-regional digital partnership, officials have encouraged further exchanges between the EU and LAC to boost the digital economy as an engine for inclusive and sustainable growth while seeking ways to bridge the digital divide.
On both sides of the Atlantic there is consensus on the opportunities offered by the extensive network of association agreements and trade agreements between the EU and LAC partners to attract investment and boost economic recovery on both sides of the Atlantic.
