The urban transition in Latin America and the Caribbean has led to 80% of the population of the region concentrating in urban areas. Within this context, the médium-sized cities assume a fundamental role in the urban future of the region, being an example of this reality the cities of Cuenca in Ecuador and Quetzaltenango in Mexico which have implemented plans of territorial ordering and urban mobility systems, through the programme of Emerging and Sustainable Cities.
