2016-09-12

The President of the EU-LAC Foundation, Dr Leonel Fernández, travelled this Sunday to San José, Costa Rica, where he will participate as a keynote speaker at the II Meeting of the Conference on Science, Innovation and Information Communication Technology (ICT), hosted by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

“Areas of cooperation for the development of innovation and the digital ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean” is the central theme of the event.

During the intergovernmental meeting, which will take place on the 12th and 13th of September, the ex-President of the Dominican Republic will share the stage with several public figures from the region, from economic, political and academic spheres.

The event will coincide with the opening of the World Forum for Information Communication Technology, which will reunite representatives from the government, the industry and ICT associations, as well as academics, in order to analyse the most recent proposals to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoted by the United Nations.

During the opening ceremony, there will be talks from the Minister of Science, Technology and Telecommunications of Costa Rica, Marcelo Jenkins; the Director of the Division of Production, Productivity and Management of the ECLAC, Mario Cimoli; the President of the National Council of University Deans of Costa Rica, Alberto Salom-Echeverría, and the President of the International Federation for Information Processing, Leon Strous.

The Conference on Science, Innovation and ICT was created in 2012 as a subsidiary body of the ECLAC in order to promote the development and the improvement of public policy, as well as a bilateral, regional and international cooperation. The intergovernmental meeting is organised by the ECLAC and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Telecommunications of Costa Rica, and is supported by the German Cooperation – GIZ and the European Commission.
