Mexico Ratifies the Agreement that Establishes the EU-LAC Foundation as an International Organisation

2018-07-18

On July 16th, within the framework of the EU – CELAC Ministerial Meeting, Mexico submitted to the depository the ratification instrument of the agreement that transforms the EU-LAC Foundation into an international organisation. With this, it became the sixth CELAC Member State to do so and the seventeenth overall.

The ratification of Mexico attests its endeavour to further reinforce and strengthen the relations between the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean. The ratification of the Foundation’s Establishment Agreement contributes to its strengthening as an instrument for the bi-regional association. The bi-regional relations play a significant role for this country that hosted the third EU-LAC Summit held in Guadalajara.

The threshold for the entry into force of the Agreement is eight ratifications from each region. The EU-LAC Foundation has been operating with transitory status under the German civil law since November 2011, yet the swift ratification of the Agreement will allow it to be recognised as a genuine bi-regional organisation and to be better equipped for the fulfilment of its ambitious mandate.
