The EU-LAC Foundation in Slovenia to promote bi regional scientific cooperation

2019-05-24

The EU-LAC Foundation has just finalised the international workshop “Strengthening capacities in institutions of Latin America, the Caribbean and the European Union for bi-regional scientific cooperation” organised jointly with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, the Bavarian Research Alliance (BayFOR) and the Horizon 2020 EULAC Focus project, in Ljubljana, Slovenia. This event is part of the second edition of the Latin America and Caribbean Days, organised by the Slovenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Bled Strategic Forum.

This gathering aimed to explore possibilities for cooperation in international research and innovation projects in the context of the Europe 2020 strategy on smart, sustainable and inclusive growth and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. It was meant also to favor the networking between practitioners and their respective institutions of different countries within the EU-LAC membership, including countries which have been less involved in the past in biregional projects.

Miroslav Cerar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia, opened the session, which convened participants from seventeen countries of the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean. Participants, mostly selected through an open call for applications, came from institutions like CINVESTAV (Mexico), the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (Italy), the National Authorising Office of Antigua and Barbuda, Fundación Chile, Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of Panama, the University of Helsinki, and the Centre for Social Innovation of Austria.

This is the first event which the EU-LAC Foundation celebrates in its new status as an international organisation, following the entry into force of its Constitutive Agreement last Friday.
